The frequent, unimaginable violence raging in Syria has left many of our neighbors scattered throughout the Middle East seeking safety as refugees.  In a once small town across the southern border in Jordan, over 80,000 Syrians have sound safety.  However, with such a large influx of refugees and limited resources, our Syrian neighbors are struggling to survive there.

In the midst of all the chaos, a local group has risen to the challenge of trying to meet immediate and long term needs of their new Syrian neighbors.  Their work is difficult but their passion and drive to Love others is…winning.  This encounter provides the opportunity to spend one week alongside these international volunteers going on home visits and providing much needed items for Syrian families.

During the home visits you will get a first-hand glimpse into what life is like for many of our Syrian neighbors.  These interactions will be guided by an interpreter (in a group) so it is not a requirement for participants to speak Arabic.

In addition, there will be times when you are not meeting with Syrian families, or assisting long term volunteers, where you can venture out and experience local life.  This will always be in a group, never on your own, and can include things like locating a restaurant and purchasing a meal for the team.  This is a great opportunity to experience the Middle East as you navigate the city and interact with local Jordanians, who in some cases, will speak little or no English.

Upon returning home, you will be able to plug your encounter abroad into your own community beginning the (OPTIONAL) 12-week Living Life Together (LLT) Program which focuses on developing lifelong, meaningful friendships with refugees from the Middle East and North Africa in your community.

The LLT program includes six, 90-minute phone calls/video chats that will have a heavy focus on teaching, while sharing stories and experiences that will begin to equip participants to engage neighbors after the very first call.  In between sessions, participants will be encouraged to complete (guided) voluntary field assignments.  These may include visiting a Mosque or a Halal store and will be tailored to each participant based on their experience and surroundings.

Our next Middle East Encounter + LLT Training opportunity will be April 1st-12th 2017.
